Renovation of 5 Shop Lots

Tokong Hotel

Transformation of 5 units historical shop-lots, built in 1939, to a boutique hotel was an exciting moment. The owner of the shop-lots gave us all the authority to come up with an unique idea, so I thought I am going to grow some ideas that are rooted to the local history and culture, but the building has to narrate its story with a new language.

Problem:
• It was a restored site accredited by UNESCO since 2008.
• The building, from wall to façade, has to be preserved up to 80% .
• The building still needs an extension to accommodate enough rooms.
• Limited electrical power and narrow roads for power supply station.
• Damp area close to sea level.
Solutions:
• The Art deco building has been enhanced in terms of windows colors quality and paint. All Ground level doors had been changed to water proof windows and doors with glass still in Baba- Nyonya pattern.
• We had to use the back yard for building the new extension.
• A huge void was a solution to bring natural light and air to the new building.
• Terrace looking down to the central court yard.
• Integrate outdoor and indoor beauty.
• Damp proof wall and floor structure.
• Use a small triangular-shaped backyard, which was accessible from car park road, as the local electrical power station for the hotel.
• Keep the Art deco language synchronized with town history of Baba- Nyonya and Melaka Port.
